OFFICIAL MEYER THEATRE MARQUEE DEDICATION AND LIGHTING CEREMONY SLATED FOR MAY 16
GREEN BAY, WI, May 12, 2005 In April, Washington Street witnessed a new addition to its downtown landscape. The new Meyer Theatre marquee was positioned into place, reinstating another important historical perspective to the restored theatre building. On Monday, May 16, the marquee will receive its official dedication ceremony outside the theatre at 117 South Washington Street during the intermission of the Allouez Village Band concert, sometime between 7:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend the dedication, as well as the concert, which begins at 7 p.m.
The marquee reinstatement is made possible in large part thanks to the generosity of the friends and family of Janet Meyer De Spirito. The Janet De Spirito Vertical Marquee dedication will officially mark the naming of the marquee in honor of her memory. Husband Rod De Spirito will participate in the ceremony in which an exterior plaque will be unveiled and the marquee perimeter lights will be officially turned on for the first time.
Betty Rose Meyer provided a $1.5 million gift to launch the theatre’s restoration in May 2000, which is named in honor of her late husband, the former president and chief executive officer of Tape, Inc., of Green Bay. The Robert T. Meyer Theatre opened its doors to the public on February 27, 2002.
The Meyer Theatre is a member of the League of Historic American Theatres, an international not-for-profit network of people and organizations that promote the rescue, restoration, and reuse of historic theatres and other heritage buildings to serve communities. The theatre is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
